Hermès History

We don’t want to bore you with the ins and outs but a bit of background knowledge on Hermes is here if you're interested!

Hermès the brand was created by Thierry Hermes in 1837. Hermès was initially a harness workshop that that gained recognition and won awards for its bridles for carriage trades. The store was then moved by Thierry Hermès son, Charles-Emile Hermès, where the development of saddle bags and eventually jackets are created through the generations.

The first women's handbag was created in 1922 and in 1929 the first couture apparel collection was released. After this, the bag magic continued and as they say, the rest was history…

The Kelly Bag

Did you know that this is actually an unnamed bag by Hermès! It was created in the 1930’s by Robert Dumas and didn’t find its fame in the bag world until the 1950’s. It was made extremely popular and given its “now” name (Kelly) as Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, shielded her then pregnant stomach with the bag.

The Kelly bag is a structured bag with one arm and a detachable shoulder strap now available. Now worn by the likes of Victoria Beckham, Tamara Ecclestone and of course the Kardashians, the bag is exceptionally popular and has kept its celebrity name and status.

The Birkin Bag

When Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas had a chance meeting on a plane, it changed the Hermès bag and brand forever. As Jane Birkin described and help design her ideal bag, the new Hermès founder created the new “It” bag for her. The Birkin bag has two handles and the signature double arm fastening on the front. Now so popular and elusive, the bag holds its own celebrity status in the handbag world.

The Constance Bag

Another favourite of The Fussy Shoppers but not always as thrown into the spotlight as the Kelly and the Birkin is the Constance. Created by Catherine Chaillet in 1959 and name after her newly born child the bag stands the test of time with its square shape, signature H buckle on the front and cross body strap.

There are currently rumours that the Hermès Constance bag range is to be discontinued, but we will always be able to source you one - it could be a great investment piece! A true favourite of the Fashionista!

We can't wait to welcome you to the Hermès bag club!!
